ON ARRIVAL

Croatia is accessible by road and rail from other parts of Europe, with popular connections through Solvenia, Austria, Serbia and Hungary, or intercontinentally via plane through a number of intermediary countries. International flights often arrive in the capital, Zagred, or Dubrovnik.

Make sure you have all your documents handy for border crossings, as moving around isn't quite as a flexible as the Schengen Area countries.

GETTING AROUND

While catching the train is one of the best ways to get around much of Europe, it's a little trickier in Croatia. While the national railway connects many cities, some southern spots aren't serviced. Don't worry - there are a number of companies which form an extensive bus network which get you just about anywhere.

If crystal-clear waters are calling your name, then visit some of Croatia's 1200 islands via ferry. Island hopping can be a little inflexible with the commerical ferry operators though, so if you're looking for a highly bespoke experience, why not charter a boat?

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Spring is well into first gear by late-March (the water is even warm enough to swim in around Dalmatia!) and great time to start your trip to Croatia. Try to be out of there by July/August - peak season in Adriatic - if you're averse to crowds. Otherwise, think about visiting in Autumn, when the mix of deciduous and evergreen green trees making trekking a magical experience.

WHERE TO GO

Visit Dubrovnik for its historic walled-in city, stunning Renaissance and Baroque architecture and sapphire-blue water. With its almost mythical look, it has been the site of many popular TV shows and films, including Game of Thrones and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Take the cable car to get a bird's eye view, or get up close and walk the fortified city walls - just don't forget to bring a drink bottle!

While traditionally travellers have ignored it in favour of its coastal sisters, Croatia's capital, Zagreb, is a quirky, gritty metropolis.  Hike up Bear Mountain, explore the Baroque palaces of Gradec, or enjoy the hustle of Trg bana Jelacica's cafes and restaurants. If you're visiting Zagreb from late May to early September, be sure to check out the Strossmartre Festival, a season-long series of outdoor concerts. Can't stay that long? Check out the InMusic Festival in late June - this three-day, camping-friendly music festival attracts headliners from all over world.

For a complex cultural scene, you can't go past Istria. With a strong Italian community, the cusine, art and architecture here is a unique mix of Mediterranean - thanks to Roman ruins and cobblestone squares - and Middle European, with Medieval churches and townships.

MUST KNOW TIPS

You have to register your place of residence with the local police station within 24 hours of arriving. If you're staying in commercial accomodation, they're usually do it for you, but it's a good idea to check.

You may have heard that unexploded landmines are a problem in Croatia, and that remains true, these are easily avoided if you stick to tourist cities, and don't stray from the path when hiking.
