  • Am I covered medically while holidaying in France?

  • Yes, all our policies cover for unlimited medical codverage. Zoom provides cover for your overseas medical expenses including hospital stays, surgery, doctor visits, emergency evacuation and repatriation home if required. We can provide written guarantees of payment of reasonable expenses directly with your hospital in emergency situations. Phew!

  • What happens if I need medical assistance in France?

  • Have complete peace of mind on your french foray. Zoom provides immediate support through our emergency assistance provider, First Assistance. Help is just a phone call away any time of day 365 days a year. This includes access to medical advisors, medical transfers and emergency evacuation if required. We also assist with passing on messages to family and returning unsupervised dependants back to Australia.

  • How do alcohol and drugs affect my cover?

  •  When it comes to alcohol we advise you to drink in moderation. One too many Châteauneuf-du-Pape could see you jeopardizing your cover. Please note that we may exclude any claims where excessive drugs or alcohol have been involved.

  • Am I covered for adventure activities throughout France?

  • We automatically cover a wide range of adventure sports including cycling, kayaking, bunjee jumping, horse riding and more. You can also buy our Adventure Pack to cover additional adventure sports. 

  • I have high value items; how much can I insure them for?

  • If you have an expensive item that you just can’t leave behind you can insure it separately for up to $5,000. Please note that high value item cover is only available under our comprehensive plan.

  • Am I covered for pick pocketing in France?

  • Yes, you’re covered for muggings provided of course, you were acting with reasonable care (i.e. did not leave your belongings unattended). If you’re the victim of a pickpocket, you’d be covered for loss, theft and damage to your luggage and personal effects. If you are robbed it’s important that you get a police report and contact us as soon as possible.

  • What age limits apply to Zoom travel insurance policies?

  • You must be under the age of 85 to buy a policy with Zoom. Those under 79 years can purchase a policy for a maximum trip duration of 365 days. Those aged between 80-85 years can purchase a policy for a maximum trip duration of 184 days only. You must also be under the age of 69 to purchase our add-on ski or adventure packs.

  • Can I reduce my excess with Zoom products?

  • Yes you can reduce the standard excess of $200 by paying a excess reduction fee within the payment process. 

  • What is a dependant?

  • This means your dependant children or grandchildren under the age of 19 at the date of policy issue who are travelling with you.

VISAS FOR FRANCE

A visa is not required for a stay of up to 90 days. You must however be in possession of a passport that has at least six months’ validity beyond your stay, as well as a round-trip ticket or onward journey ticket.
 
These rules can change quickly. Contact your nearest French Consulate or Embassy before you travel for the most up to date information.

ON ARRIVAL

We don’t want to lie. Charles-de-Gaulle Airport, the main airport servicing Paris, can be pretty chaotic. For years, travellers have complained about the lack of inefficiency, the confusion, and the long, long queues. Try and be patient and when you land, don’t get off the plane with the expectation that you’ll be out of the terminal quickly. However, once you are of the terminal, you can relax. Getting to the centre of Paris is very easy, with train, bus, taxi and shuttle options readily available.

GETTING AROUND

Paris’ Metro is easy, efficient, and extensive. Despite the seemingly endless tangle of coloured lines on the Metro map, it’s not too difficult to master and it’s the quickest way to get around Paris. A couple of tips about the Metro: it stops running around 1am Monday through Thursday and Sunday, and at 2am on Fridays and Saturdays; when getting on the Metro, the doors don’t automatically open. You’ll need to push the button.
 
If you’re not using the Metro, use your legs. Paris is a relatively flat city and walking is one of the best ways to see it as a tourist. There’s always something to see and so many hidden gems to discover. Taxis are also available but you’ll have to call ahead for one or wait at a taxi rank. Plus, they’re expensive, particularly at night.
 

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Paris is special any time of year, and the best time to visit all depends on the type of holiday you want to have. That said, it’s recommended you avoid visiting during July and August, as this is the holiday period for the French. A lot of things shut down, and because many of the French tend to holiday within their own country, the city gets crowded with domestic tourists. Springtime (April to June) and autumn (September to November) are both good times to visit, as there tends to be slightly fewer crowds and generally pleasant weather. Paris can get extremely cold during winter, but if you willing to brave the chill, you’ll be rewarded with much quieter streets and attractions.

It’s almost impossible to narrow down a Paris to-do list. The City of Lights has so much to offer, and that is exactly why so many travellers adore it. Here are just a few of the many highlights of Paris:

For culture vultures – the Louvre, Musee Rodin, Museum of Modern Art, Musee Picasso.
Touristy attractions – Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame (tip – join the line and climb the towers for sweeping city views and a meeting with the famous gargoyles); Catacombs of Paris; Grand Palais; Arc De Triomphe; Montmarte.
Parks – Jardin du Luxembourg; Parc de Buttes-Chaumont; Vincennes Woods; Jardin des Tuileries.

MUST KNOW TIPS

Don’t assume everyone speaks English. Parisians tend to find it annoying when travellers don’t even attempt to speak a little French. Learn a couple of helpful French phrases before you go, grab yourself a phrase book, or download one of the many language apps that are available. Beware of pickpockets in tourist hotspots and keep your bags and other belongings secure and close to your body. Dining is considered an experience in France and gulping down your meal is not the done thing. Take your time when eating in a restaurant. If you’re after food on the go, duck into one of the thousands of cafés or boulangeries for a sandwich, croissant or other snack.
